My Bed, 1998, Tracey Emin (born 3 July 1963)
Exhibited in the Tate Gallery in 1999, My Bed received considerable media attention. Emin displayed her personal bed complete with stained bed sheets and items on the floor consisting of condoms, empty cigarette boxes, dirty underwear, and other various personal items.
Besides the obvious shock-value of the art, other problems included museum-goers attempts to sit or jump on the bed as well as one attempt to clean the objects up from the piece. Eventually, the work had to be roped off.
From the Saatchi Gallery’s website:
“Tracey shows us her own bed, in all its embarrassing glory. Empty booze bottles, fag butts, stained sheets, worn panties: the bloody aftermath of a nervous breakdown. By presenting her bed as art, Tracey Emin shares her most personal space, revealing she’s as insecure and imperfect as the rest of the world.”
